Why Midtown is economically depressed?

Michelle Alexander is a gifted lawyer whose 10 years of research for her new book has culminated with a concise portrayal of why Midtown is economically depressed. This video is a good primer for her book: The New Jim Crow. The Public Safety Committee and several members of City Council are reading the book which may be essential in forming public policy going forward…

  1. Bravo, Kurt and CONA for posting this fantastic lecture. It's really encouraging to know this conversation is going on within the Public Safety Committee and some of our elected officials. I didn't know about Michelle Alexander's work and am definitely going to buy a couple of copies of the book. Thanks!

    1. Hi Andrea, Unfortunately CONA has had a change of management and direction. This topic is now strictly forbidden. NAACP St Petersburg is now working the issue. Our Public Safety Committee meets every 2nd Saturday at 10:00am at the NAACP Office 1501 16th St S, St Petersburg - Everyone is Welcome!

  3. The book and her videos expose bias and discrimination that hurts our neighborhood and our families. CONA should work with the Chamber, city council, LWV and others to reform the Justice system and help keep kids from getting involved with crime. Restoration of voting rights is needed to give us back our voice in the political system. More rehabilitation in prison and stronger probation are needed. PSC meetings of 4 people can't do it alone. I'd like to see this advocacy take place in a new Legislative or Public Policy committee formed by CONA.

This doesn't excuse us from responsibility for doing what we can do to prevent crime and keep our neighborhoods safe. The PSC has not done much lately to help neighborhoods use the available tools like Crime Watch and Citizen's Patrol. High crime neighborhoods need the most help getting organized and these tools will work to protect families and neighbors who participate. While we wait to change the world we should make our block a safer place.

By the way, I just found this website and I'm glad to see it even though it is out of date. It lists the next PSC Meeting as Saturday Jun 23rd 10:30AM @ Cafe Bohemia. I think that place closed a year or two ago.
